Desktop Deployment Webcast

E-mail Print PDF

With as crazy as the last few weeks have been (traveling two out of three weeks to MMS and TechEd), I forgot to post about a webcast that I am going to be a part of tomorrow. I will be part of a joint webcast with Virteva (the company I work for) and Microsoft Consulting Services. The webcast is focused on desktop deployment and is designed more for the IT manager or decision maker...not necessarily for technical people...it will not be a technical webcast. I will be co-presenting with Steve Campbell from MCS.

The three main aspects of the session will be a high level overview of Desktop Deployment best practices, information on the "Desktop Deployment Planning Service (DDPS)", and information on "Desktop Optimization Using Microsoft Windows Vista and 2007 Microsoft Office System (DOVO)"

If you would like to attend the webcast, it will be on Wednesday May 20 from 11:30-1:00 Central time. The link to register for the webcast is:

E-mail Print PDF

Hello everyone,

It was great to see many familiar faces from MN at MMS this year. This month's meeting is on Wednesday 5/20 at the Microsoft Bloomington office. This will be an informal Round Table discussion, which is always a great way to bring up issues or questions you may have in your environment. We'll start by discussing our main take away points from MMS and have an open floor for topics.

This month we are fortunate to have pizza and beverages provided by the team from Piper Jaffray. Food arrives at 4:30, and we'll start the meeting at 5:00, ending anywhere from 6:30-7:00. If someone has a question or topic they would like to discuss feel free to email me and I'll make a list to bring up at the meeting.

Please sign up using this link so we can order the right amount of food, we'll have some MMS swag to give away as well.

MMS: A Serious Poll with a Serious Outcome

E-mail Print PDF

From: Rod Trent

Subject: MMS: A Serious Poll with a Serious Outcome

We've posted a poll that really needs your attention. Every couple years you hear rumors about how Microsoft wants to merge the highly successful MMS into TechEd, pushing the System Center products you know and love into a sort of obscurity and potentially turning technical MMS sessions into watered-down and diluted version at TechEd. Personally, I would hate to see this happen. I know most of you feel that way, too. MMS has turned into a MUST-attend event every year for those who manage their environments.

LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD through this new poll. Take the poll, add your comments - all of them. Tell us how you feel about the ideas represented there. And, then, pass it along to someone you know who would also love for their own voice to count. If you need to, take your time to put all your thoughts into words and just let us know how you feel.

Here's the link:

http://www.myitforum.com/absolutepm/polls/mms-teched.asp

And, feel free to discuss this poll, it's implications, and your thoughts in the System Center community (myITforum lists, forums, Facebook, Twitter, etc.).

My favorite comment on this so far:

There are so many die hard MMS fans that I think you could hold it at a camp ground and folks would come. Of course anyone who knows me knows that my idea of camping is the Holiday Inn, but I would consider going camping for MMS...well if I am ever able to travel again.

You know "geeks" are funny folks. They do not necessarily make "friends" easily, and do not always know how to interact to make new contacts. I think we have all worked very hard to try to reach out and include everyone whenever possible at our conference. Although I really enjoyed my first few conferences, I always said that I never felt so alone amongst so many folks that do the same type of job that I do. This was one of the main reasons that the myITforum awards started. There need to be a way to point out who people are so that the "human" side of the online community could be obtained. We all remember being that person struggling to make SMS work and go to great lengths to assist others in their companies. And you know we could have really let that SMS 2.0 product be the death of Microsoft, but we hung in there and devoted ourselves to make it better. I think Microsoft should hang in there with us :)

What a shame it will be if we lose this "spirit".
Is there a bottom line of what you think Microsoft is looking for out of MMS that they feel they are not getting? Is it the overall cost? How are the numbers for TechEd? Do you know if the number of attendees dropped this year?

I know the Exchange folks are still so very disappointed that there no longer is an Exchange conference. And I can honestly say that they did not switch to TechEd when their conference was eliminated.

A myITforum conference...well you know we will be knocking on the doors of all of the vendors that were at MMS to support us in that effort if MMS goes away. Besides I will have to take my MMS soduko skills somewhere....

regards,
april

  • Microsoft and Novell Experience Increased Demand From Customers Seeking to Maximize IT Investments Through Greater Interoperability

REDMOND, Wash., and WALTHAM, Mass. — June 10, 2009 — As organizations of all shapes and sizes are making every possible effort to deliver greater value to their business and customers, IT managers are being required to increase the efficiency of their operational infrastructure, systems and processes. As a result, a greater number of companies are signing on for the interoperability and intellectual property (IP) peace of mind solutions offered by Novell Inc. and Microsoft Corp. through their business, legal and technical collaboration agreement.

In just the past six months, the two companies have signed more than 100 new customers, which is double the rate in the first two years of their relationship. In total, since their November 2006 collaboration agreement, the two companies have sold more than $200 million in certificates for Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server support and maintenance to more than 300 customers. The latest customers to sign on include companies in a broad range of industries and geographies, such as Boise Inc., Idaho Power Company, Honeywell Aerospace, La Poste, Procter & Gamble Co. (P&G), SC Johnson, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Sky TV and St. Jude Medical Center.

“In today’s economic environment, when customers are looking to derive the greatest value from their IT investments, we are seeing an increased rate of demand for the interoperability solutions and IP peace of mind benefits provided by our collaboration,” said Ted MacLean, general manager for Strategic Partnerships and Licensing at Microsoft. “Consistently positive feedback and sales results demonstrate that our relationship with Novell has been successful in delivering interoperability solutions that help our customers showcase the value IT contributes to their business.”

“The relationship has substantially benefited Microsoft’s Linux integration story and has driven Linux revenue for Novell,” said analyst Jay Lyman of 451 Group. “The development and work by the two companies to improve Linux and Windows interoperability addresses the reality of mixed enterprise environments for customers, who were largely the impetus for this collaboration and are now benefiting from the resulting technology and support.”

Customer Uptake of Novell’s Expanded Support for Linux Distributions

Microsoft and Novell have made a number of investments to help customers derive the greatest possible value from their IT investments, including Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise Server Subscription with Expanded Support. This package provides technical support for customers’ existing Linux deployments — including Red Hat Enterprise Linux — while the organization transitions to Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, gaining significant cost savings and enabling the benefits of interoperability. There has been strong initial customer interest in the program since it launched in November 2008, and more than 10 percent of new customers in the past six months have signed on for this support package. One such customer is U.K.-based 2e2, one of the fastest-growing IT managed services and solutions providers in Europe.

“At 2e2, we deliver mission-critical managed outsource services, data management, software consulting and unified communications solutions to large enterprise customers that demand quality,” said Ciaran Cosgrave, director of Managed Services for 2e2. “We believe that the Microsoft and Novell relationship offers a number of real commercial, legal and technical benefits to our customers, and because of this, we will be supporting the initiative across the majority of our business divisions. We are very impressed with the innovative Expanded Support program that gives customers simple access to 24x7 support, delivered through a single company, Novell, irrespective of what major Linux distribution is being run. This creates simplicity while at the same time reducing cost. 2e2, with assistance from the Microsoft and Novell relationship, is well positioned to deliver its customers the services they need, at the price they want, in these difficult economic times.”

“Solutions like Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise Server Subscription with Expanded Support allow customers to standardize and consolidate on a single, enterprise-grade Linux environment,” said Susan Heystee, general manager for Strategic Alliances at Novell. “Customers get the immediate benefits of lower total cost of ownership and proven interoperability, all with the assurance of world-class support for their legacy Linux environment.”

Market Growth in China and Asia Pacific Region

A specific area of focus for Novell and Microsoft has been in China and the Asia Pacific region, where the two companies made an incremental investment one year ago to help transition unsupported Linux users to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server subscribers. As more organizations in those markets seek to bridge the gap between open source and proprietary software, the Novell-Microsoft investment is paying off, evidenced by the more than 50 new customers throughout the region that have signed on for the companies’ joint offering of interoperability and IP peace of mind for mixed-source IT environments.

“The interoperability and intellectual property peace of mind supplied by Novell and Microsoft are valuable and significant,” said Zhao Wei, manager of the IT department for State Grid Corporation of China. “That is something that other Linux vendors were just not able to provide. The collaboration between these companies is what is driving our consideration to standardize all of our Linux servers on Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, as this is the optimal distribution for interoperability with Microsoft Windows Server.”

Novell and Microsoft have signed on more than 30 new Chinese subscribers over the past year, and similar interest is spreading quickly within the neighboring markets as well, with more than 20 new subscribers in Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan. A partial listing of these organizations can be found below.

“We believe that this collaboration will produce tangible cost-reduction benefits to every customer that is considering a dual-platform strategy based on Microsoft Windows Server and a single widely available Linux server distribution,” said Leo Cheng, IT manager with Unitech Printed Circuit Board Corp., based in Taiwan. “In our opinion, Novell SUSE is the logical distribution of choice for existing Microsoft Windows Server customers that want both optimized virtualization solutions and extended systems management capabilities now and in the future.”

    Delivery of Real-World Interoperability Solutions

The business and legal aspects of the Novell-Microsoft agreement opened the door for the two companies to work together to develop technical interoperability solutions. Now, more than ever, these solutions offer significant value for customers running both Microsoft Windows Server and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.

“The primary impetus for our joint Interoperability Lab was to increase the value we can deliver to customers,” said Tom Hanrahan, director of the Open Source Technology Center at Microsoft, which includes the Microsoft-Novell Interoperability Lab in Cambridge, Mass. “We felt that it was critical to set up a collaborative environment dedicated to delivering better technical interoperability so that the testing and development work performed in the lab could directly influence features and capabilities as they are being engineered into our respective products.”

The Interoperability Lab has already tackled projects spanning a wide range of customer-focused interoperability concerns, and continues to make progress through programs encompassing virtualization, systems management, server workload validation and rich media support. One such example is the development of Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise Management Pack for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager, which, when it is released later this month, will extend the monitoring capabilities within Microsoft System Center Operations Manager R2 across seven SUSE Linux Enterprise services and enable customers to monitor both their Linux and Windows system environments through one console.

“The early spirit of cooperation that Microsoft and Novell have taken with the Interoperability Lab since its inception has helped it to evolve into an intermediary point for our two companies, and has also influenced additional programs and projects,” said Suzanne Forsberg, senior software manager for Novell and co-manager of the Cambridge facility. “The result is that we contribute our respective strengths to create practical and beneficial solutions for our mixed source customers.”

More details about these technical programs and solution demonstrations can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2009/Jun09/06-11NovellMsftInterop.mspx. Additional information about the Microsoft and Novell agreement, customer migrations, and the work being performed within their joint Interoperability Lab can also be found at http://www.moreinterop.com.

  • Union Bank Leverages Southern California Edison Rebate and Lowers PC Energy Use by 58 Percent with Adaptiva Companion
Seattle, WA (PRWEB) June 11, 2009 -- Adaptiva today announced that Union Bank, N.A. has reduced PC energy use by 58 percent after successfully deploying Adaptiva Companion, a PC power and configuration management software, on 12,500 desktop computers.

    Environmentally friendly desktop computing
San Francisco-based Union Bank powers down PC's during non-work hours reducing energy use by 3.2 million kWh, saving $387,000 and eliminating 2313 metric tons of co2 emissions annually -- equivalent to powering 320 homes. This environmentally conscious initiative qualified Union Bank for a business computing rebate from Southern California Edison (SCE).

"We recognize the importance of minimizing the impact of our operations on the environment. Companion with its measurable PC energy savings has helped us make an immediate impact," said Susan Miller, senior vice president, Union Bank's Corporate Social Responsibility group.

    Improving IT and end-user productivity
Union Bank's desktop environment is managed with Microsoft's System Management Server. The aim was to reduce environmental impact and increase business productivity by providing a highly available and secure computing environment. Companion's PC configuration management and power management capabilities work together to make this possible.

According to Robert Walters, VP of Distributed Computing Services, "Leaving PC's on for system maintenance during non-work hours resulted in wasted energy. We can now switch PC's off as Companion powers them on during non-work hours, completes maintenance tasks and powers PC's off. We save energy while delivering a reliable computing environment without any end-user disruption"

Slow climate change and get a rebate
Many utilities recognize the powerful energy conservation opportunity that Companion provides. In order to receive a project cost rebate Union Bank provided the following Companion reports to SCE:

    • Number of PCs being controlled and a list of licenses
    • Quantified energy savings across the PC base
Peter Burnham, Founder of Adaptiva commented "Companion is easy to implement and provides a quick energy conservation win while increasing IT productivity. In this economic environment, rebates from various utilities provide a great way to do the right thing without any budgetary impact. In California the project cost for Companion is covered by the rebate. "
